Warmia and Mazury Region
The region of Warmia and Mazury consists of Warmia, Mazury and parts of Powiśle. Due to a huge number of lakes and forests the region is called the Land of Thousand Lakes. In reality, there are more than thousand lakes here, and that means even more opportunities for practicing water sports, taki ng conditioning trips and resting in hotels, B&B’s and health resorts.
The area of the region – 24 202 square km.
Population: 1,4 mln inhabitants, including 100 thousand representatives of ethnic minorities, which makes Warmia and Mazury the most ethnically varied region in Poland and proves that a peaceful coexistence of different ethnic communities is possible.
Five million tourists visit the region every year.
Apart from the beauty of unspoiled nature, the region has a lot of historical attractions to offer, for example:
- gothic castles and beautiful churches
- the unique Ostróda-Elbląg Canal with several slipways
- the darkest relic of World War II, namely the Wolf’s Lair (Hitler’s headquarters) in Gierloż
- the cities of Copernicus, i.e. Olsztyn, Frombork, Lidzbark Warmiński
- staging the Battle of Grunwald and arranging Napoleon-related battles and garden parties
In the region of Warmia and Mazury one can certainly rest all year round, and, in addition, have access to high quality food. Numerous restaurants offer culinary dainties from all over the world, but, even more importantly, they also promote the Culinary Heritage cuisine which is important from the point of view of the regional culture.
One of the most important objectives of the development strategy for the region of Warmia and Mazury is sustainable growth based on preserving its natural environment and beautiful landscape, and on respecting its history. In particular, numerous economic activities in the region include dynamically developing enterprises producing food, furniture, tyres, clothing, machine industry. New environment-friendly jobs and business projects are created. More and more foreign companies are also interested in investing here. Among the corporations which already have a significant position on the local market are Michelin (France), Smithfield Food (USA), Philips Lighting (Holland), Ikea (Sweden). The Warmia and Mazury Special Economic Zone, with 13 subzones, offers incentives for entrepreneurs, who can also count on the support from the local government, branch offices of the greatest banks and consulting companies.
There are numerous offers for people who want to entertain themselves. In Olsztyn, the capital of the region, Poland’s longest summer festival is held every year. During the three months of the festival every day audiences are exposed to music and theatre events. The Olsztyn Castle can be visited with the assistance of a guide who looks just like famous Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus!
